FAQs
What tubing materials are used in automotive wire harness applications?
The most common materials for automotive wire harness tubing are PVC, polyolefin, and TPV. PVC is used in interior applications where cost and flexibility are priorities. Polyolefin is preferred in engine compartments due to its wider temperature range and chemical resistance. TPV is increasingly specified as a halogen-free alternative to PVC, particularly for OEMs with environmental compliance requirements. Grayline manufactures all three in custom sizes and colors to match specific harness designs.
What is the best heat shrink tubing for automotive wire harness protection?
For most automotive wire harness applications, cross-linked polyolefin heat shrink is the preferred choice. It offers a wide operating temperature range, good chemical resistance, and meets SAE AS23053 and UL 224 requirements. For under-hood applications requiring moisture sealing, adhesive-lined dual wall heat shrink provides an added layer of protection. PVC heat shrink is suitable for interior applications where temperature requirements are less demanding and cost is a factor.
Can I get custom-sized automotive tubing in small production runs?
Yes. Grayline specializes in short-run custom tubing including non-standard diameters, wall thicknesses, and colors. Because Grayline uses chemically cross-linked polyolefin rather than irradiated material, small quantity production runs are cost effective even for custom sizes. Custom color matching is available for both PVC and polyolefin to match existing harness components or OEM color coding requirements.
What automotive specifications does Grayline tubing meet?
Grayline tubing is manufactured to meet or exceed the requirements of major automotive specifications including SAE J1128 (Low Voltage Primary Cable), FMVSS 302 (Flammability of Interior Materials), SAE AS23053 (Heat Shrinkable Sleeving), and UL 224 (Extruded Insulating Tubing). GM, Ford, and Stellantis OEM specification families are available upon request. If your application references a specification not listed, contact Grayline's engineering team for compatibility evaluation.
When should I use TPV tubing instead of PVC in automotive applications?
TPV (thermoplastic vulcanizate) is the preferred choice over PVC when halogen-free materials are required, when the application involves exposure to oils or fuels, or when the OEM specification prohibits plasticizers. TPV also performs better in high-heat environments and is increasingly specified by automotive OEMs transitioning away from PVC for sustainability reasons. PVC remains the more cost-effective option for interior applications without these constraints.
